Planning Tips:
- Decide how many will be attending. It’s important to make sure you will be prepared to have enough food and beverages available for everyone. It’s also a good idea to plan for extra, because you never know if someone that was invited, suddenly invites someone else! Be sure to include any parents that may attend as well.
- Invitations make the event even more exciting. When sending out invitations, be sure to include the start and end time, date, location and if they should bring a gift or not. Also, ask for an RSVP, so that you know for sure that they are attending. Does the special birthday boy or girl have a favorite color and/or theme that they would like? If so, try and create a special theme for them by using the colors and designs for the decorations and for the cups, plates and napkins.
- Entertainment is very important, so find out what type of music and games they like. Are you planning to hire someone to be a DJ, or will you provide the music for them? If you will be providing it, make sure you have the proper equipment to play it on. Will you be showing movies? If so, be sure you have everything needed to play the movies so that everyone will be able to see and hear it well enough. If those aren’t options that interest you, what about hiring entertainment? Some children like clowns or magicians. What does the birthday child like?
- Planning the food menu is a key ingredient for a successful birthday party. I know when I was a kid, I wanted to have all my favorite foods and snacks! It’s good to have a couple of choices so that not only will it give some variety, but will make everyone attending feel special. It’s also important to check with the parents of the children that will be attending, to make sure their child doesn’t have any food allergies, or if they have any special dietary needs to account for. It’s also a good idea to provide plenty of water as well as any other drinks you’ll have, such as punch, juice or soda.
- Make the celebration even more special with small gift bags for the other children. Just a little something that they can take home, that will be a little reminder of the great time they had. If there will be both boys and girls at the party, you can make the gift bags for either, or have some specifically for girls or specifically for boys. When making them for both, you could have things like balloons, bubbles, candy etc. If you want to make them separate, you could add things like hair bows and clips for girls or toy cars for boys.
- If you are planning to hire someone to bring and provide the food, make sure you contact them well in advance. It’s important that they are available on the day of the party and at the time they need to be there. That also goes for anyone designated to decorate and set up for whatever is planned for that day.
- Every birthday party needs a cake! Will you be making it or ordering one? Depending on how many people will be attending, be sure there is plenty of cake for everyone. And if you will also be serving ice cream, make sure you are able to store it for long periods of time, so it stays solid and doesn’t melt before it’s served!
- Is this going to be a surprise party? If that’s the case, be very clever in how you go about planning and arranging everything. Kids are sometimes not the best at keeping secrets! So if you want that special birthday surprise, it may need to be a surprise for the guests as well as the birthday boy or girl. Talking with the parents of the other kids, you can make plans with them to go about things in a sneaky but clever way. Have them plan something with their kids for that day, that would include a shopping trip to purchase a gift, (if they will be bringing one), so that they won’t spoil the surprise in advance. This could be tricky, but parents are really good at figuring out ways to surprise their kids!
- Lastly, plan for everyone to have fun. This is a celebration! Think back to your childhood and what made YOUR birthday so special. Even though times may have changed, the essence of a child’s birthday party remains the same. Making them feel special. This is the only time they will ever be that age, so help them to be able to look back in years to come, and remember what a wonderful time they had and how much love they felt on that very special day.
